Beeswax Candles

Beeswax Candles for Religious Festivals and Celebrations

The Pantanassa Monastery online store has a beautiful selection of beeswax candles available for sale. It is interesting to note that the colour of beeswax naturally varies in tone from deep tan to pale yellow and is dependent on the type of nectar that has been gathered by the bees. When you enter an Orthodox church, you will often light candles before icons and then offer your prayers for your friends or members of your family. By lighting candles in front of an icon, you are displaying your faith in God as well as your hope that by turning to Him and His saints, He will answer your prayers.

The proceeds from the sale of all our online items, such as beeswax candles, contribute towards the Pantanassa Monastery Building Program. We also sell a wide variety of other religious items, ranging from icons and portrait prints to incense burners and prayer ropes. Whether you’d like objects to use for purposes of worship in your own home or at your church, you’re sure to be spoiled for choice.

The Importance of Candles for Easter

In the Greek Orthodox faith, the Paschal candle is very symbolic. Our faith reaches its pinnacle at Easter time. Easter celebrations also include hard-boiled eggs which have been dyed red as a symbol of the blood of Christ. Ancient civilisations viewed eggs as being symbolic in their myths and legends. The Paschal candle is the first candle to be lit with a flame from the sacred fire during the Easter vigil. This candle is representative of Christ as a symbol of light or life dispelling death, while the new flame used to light the candle represents an image of the Resurrection.

  • Our Greek Easter Candles, which we also refer to as Easter Lambathes, are decorated Easter candles. We use beeswax to make our candles, which we then decorate, engrave and paint by hand. Your family may be one of the families who traditionally buy these candles for your Godchildren, as well as bringing them to church on Holy Saturday. We can make Easter candles for boys with blue ribbons, girls with pink ribbons and others without ribbons. ‘Christ is Risen’ is engraved and hand-painted on each candle.
  • Lent candles are representative of the light of Christ, “I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”..

History of Pantanassa

Our online store has been running for about ten years, although as an organisation we have been in existence for far longer. The building of the Pantanassa Monastery – to which we contribute all our proceeds – commenced in 2005 with the construction of the Pantanassa Monastery main church, also known as the Catholicon. The Catholicon, dedicated to the Holy Mother of God Pantanassa, includes a small chapel dedicated to St John Chrysostom. The late Archbishop Stylianous laid its foundation stone on 16 July 2005. The building of the monks’ quarters began in 2008, along with the kitchen, refectory, and the library. Construction continued until late 2010 and was then, unfortunately, put on hold for financial reasons.

We were, happily, able to recommence construction in 2013, with work commencing on the drainage, electricity, courtyard, and living quarters. The development of the second wing of the monks’ accommodation was started in January of 2016 and will consist of eight monastic cells when complete.

If you require any assistance with any of the items you see on our website, or you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with us. We will be happy to assist you in any way.
