Saint Amalia of Maubeuge, also known as Saint Amalberga or Amelia, was born around 640 in Liege of the Wallon Region within the present day Belgium. She is said to have been a relative (sister or niece) of St Pippin of Landen and married Count Witgner, Duke of Lorraine. In her biography she is presented as the mother of three saints: Emebert, Reineldis and Gudula.
When their youngest daughter Gudula had grown up, both Amalburga and her husband retired to Monasteries, the Count to Lobbes, Belgium, Amalia to Maubeuge Abbey where she embraced a life of asceticism, philanthropy and prayer.
Upon her venerable repose in 690, she was buried beside her husband at the monastery at Lobbes and her relics have been in Saint Peter’s abbey church in Ghent, Belgium since 1073.
She is known to protect farmers and people against arm pain, bruises, and fever.
