SAINT CHRISTOPHER, THE GREAT MARTYR, FULL BODY 9037 St. Christopher was large and strong, and so he served in the Imperial Roman Army in the time of the Emperor Decius, 249-251 AD. Following his conversion to Christianity, he spent some time as a human ferry, carrying travellers across a river on his back. In this icon he is shown carrying Christ over a river, which he did; hence why the name Christopher means “Christ-Bearer”. St. Christopher was tortured and finally beheaded by the Roman authorities on May 9, 255 AD.
