SAINT NICHOLAS, THE NEW MARTYR OF VOUNENA, GREECE, FULL BODY 6828 The Martyr Nicholas of Vounena was born in Asia Minor in the 9th century. Emperor Leo appointed him guardian of the city of Thessalonica. When the Avars invaded Thessaly, they caused much devestation and death. Nicholas and his soldiers retreated to the village called Vounena, and they assumed a life of chastity and prayer. He and his soldiers lived the angelic life of monasticism.The enemies captured them, and urged them to abandon the faith and worship the Avar “gods,” But they remained faithful to Christ and martyred for Christ in the year 912AD.
