In celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 a unique collectors commemorative coin was officially launched by the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Christos Karras, in the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios and other distinguished guests on Friday 4 June 2021 at the Cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

The launching of the 200-year Anniversary coin is important not only for the present but for future generations. It stands as a symbol and witness of our identity and spiritual and ethnic values. It reminds us, our children, and grandchildren of the struggles of our Ethnos to free itself from the Ottoman despotism and secure the continuity of the Greek presence on the world scene.

To help facilitate the sale of the coins Pantanassa Monastery has made them available on our website: $120 for the sterling silver coin and $60 for the copper coin. The coin is a limited edition with only 1821 minted of each.

The acquisition of this commemorative coin is an item of inheritance: to be acquired and passed on from generation to generation. Each family should endeavour to acquire one for each of your children as ‘προίκα’, dowry.

The front of each coin bears a relief representation of ‘The Secret School’ (Κρυφό Σχολειό) as well as the phrase ‘For Faith and Homeland’, in Greek and English. The reverse depicts the 200 Anniversary emblem of the Holy Archdiocese, with the flags of Greece and Australia.

We congratulate His Eminence Archbishop Makarios and His National Committee for the Celebrations of the 200th Anniversary for minting the commemorative coin which will not only honour the historic event of the Revolution of 1821 but will also be a landmark for the next generations of the Greek diaspora.
