St. George and St. Demetrios are the most famous warrior saints in the Church. They are known to be “quick-to-hear” the prayers offered to them for their intercession to God, and work many miracles even today when called upon for help, saving many from misfortune, calamity, and even death. St. George was a tribune in the Roman Army at 20, and St. Demetrius was the military governor of Salonika (modern day Thessalonica) at a young age.
Both were favored by their superiors and even Roman Emperors for their intelligence and bravery, but when called upon to confess Christ before the authorities who were persecuting Christians, they stood fast, and thereby were terribly tortured. Christ even returned them to health after torture and they appeared well and whole before their persecutors and the watching crowds, to receive further tortures. Because of the multitudes that saw such obvious miracles before their eyes, many converted, seeing their patience and faith, and even miracle-working of these truly Great Martyrs for the Christian Faith. St. George died in a.d. 303 and St. Demetrios in a.d. 306, and stand now before their King in Heaven.
