Saint Nectarios was born in Selyvria in 1846. In 1889, Nectarios was consecrated Bishop of Pentapolis. His modesty, chastity and childlike innocence, aroused envy in men and priests who slandered St Nectarios to the Patriarch Sophrony which caused his dismissal as bishop. Accepting this injustice Nectarios left for Athens, where he was neglected until appointed dean of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens in 1894 profoundly influencing the next generation of priests. At the request of certain pious women, in 1904 he began the building of the convent of the Holy Trinity on the island of Aegina. He became the protector of all Aegina. Here also he endured slanders however never did he seek to take revenge but forgave all. Although he had already worked wonders in life, an innumerable multitude of miracles have been wrought after his repose in 1920. He was officially canonised a saint on April 20, 1961 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
